The county of Honolulu adopted the following codes:

  • The International Existing Building, 2006 edition. County of Honolulu, County Code, § 16-9.1 (IEBC adopted).
  • The International Energy Conservation Code, 2006 edition. County of Honolulu, County Code, § 32-3.1 (IECC adopted).

Existing Buildings

Existing buildings, meaning buildings that were built in accordance to code at the time of construction, typically merit extra consideration in a current updated code.

R102.7 Existing Structures. The legal occupancy of any structure existing on the date of adoption of this code shall be permitted to continue without change, except as is specifically covered in this code or the Fire Code, or as is deemed necessary by the building official for the general safety and welfare of the occupants and the public.

Buildings in existence at the time of the adoption of this code may have their existing use or occupancy continued if such use or occupancy was legal at the time of the adoption of this code, provided such continued use does not constitute a hazard to the general safety and welfare of the occupants and the public.
